Practise the short a vowel in familiar three-letter words. This printable word search is for learners who have already met the letter sounds; it is recognition practice, not a first phonics lesson.
Make a short a cvc words worksheetYour starting word list
Before you print
Read through the list together. Check that learners know the meaning of each word, and replace words that do not fit your lesson. The generator uses uppercase A–Z letters. A worksheet practises spelling and recognition; introduce new meanings before asking learners to work independently.
A classroom idea
Say cat, then swap the first sound to make hat or bat. Learners point to the changed letter before looking for the whole word.
Talk about it
Which part stays the same in CAT, HAT and MAT?
Choose an activity
- Word search: start with across and down, then add diagonal or backward directions.
- Vocabulary bingo: use the small grid with this list, and call words or definitions.
- Word scramble: rebuild each word and check it against the separate key.

A short, supported sequence
Read four words aloud and model blending the sounds. Group CAT, BAT, HAT, MAT, SAT and RAT together, then compare CAN, FAN, MAN and PAN. The final pair MAP and BAG uses different endings: do not describe the entire list as one rhyming family. Start the search with across-and-down directions, leaving the word bank visible.
Check the sound after the puzzle
Ask learners to choose two found words, read them and explain which letter changed. A learner who can find a letter sequence may still need help blending it. Keep a small reference card available and revisit one spelling next lesson. For bingo, call the word clearly; several words rhyme, so a rhyming clue alone would not identify one answer.
