Play vocabulary bingo with definitions
Vocabulary bingo can practise listening and meaning as well as recognising a printed word. Generate different cards from one shared word list so players see the same vocabulary in different positions.
Prepare a fair game
A small 3 × 3 card uses eight words and a free center. A large 5 × 5 card needs 24 words. Generate up to six different cards, then print the teacher call sheet. With more than six players, let pairs share a card or generate another set.
Agree on a winning pattern
Decide before you start whether a row, a column or a diagonal wins. Remind learners that the center is already marked. Read each clue clearly and give everyone enough time to respond.
Call a clue
Instead of reading “pencil”, say “something you can write with and sharpen”. A clue can sometimes match more than one word; check your clues against the whole list before playing. For new learners, say the word and its definition together.
Check the meaning
When someone calls bingo, ask them to read their winning words and explain one of the clues. Use the call sheet to confirm that all winning words were called. Keep the tone supportive and use uncertainty as a chance to discuss meaning.
